Private Transportation from Aspen to Crested Butte

transportation to crested butte from aspen

Getting from Aspen to Crested Butte requires crossing some of Colorado’s most rugged mountain terrain. Despite these two legendary ski towns sitting just 40 miles apart as the crow flies, the Elk Mountains create a formidable barrier, making travel between them significantly more complicated. There are no direct flights between Aspen and Gunnison (the closest airport to Crested Butte), and no shared shuttles operate between the two valleys. A private car service with a reputable provider like Blue Sky Limo is the most practical way to make this journey. But there are a few other transportation options to consider:

Transportation MethodCostTravel TimeBest For
Blue Sky Limo$850–$950/vehicle3–4 hoursGroups, families, ski trips
Rental Car$100–$200/day + gas3–4+ hoursExtended stays, local exploration
Public TransitNot availableN/AN/A
Uber/Lyft$600+/trip3–4+ hoursExtremely limited availability

Rental cars can work for extended stays, and if you plan to explore the Gunnison Valley independently, but understand that winter driving in Colorado can be very challenging, and going over the Monarch Pass also requires AWD or snow tires to meet Colorado’s strict traction laws. Rideshare availability between these remote mountain towns is essentially nonexistent. For comfort, reliability, and safety, Blue Sky Limo is by far the best way to travel from Aspen to Crested Butte!

Tip!
Hike Between Two Legendary Ski Towns

Did you know you can hike from Aspen to Crested Butte? The 11-mile trail over West Maroon Pass takes you past the famous Maroon Bells, through wildflower-filled alpine meadows, and over a 12,500-foot pass in the heart of the Elk Mountains. During the summer months, Blue Sky Limo can shuttle you and your group back to Aspen after you’ve completed this bucket-list adventure!

Why Travel from Aspen to Crested Butte?

Aspen and Crested Butte represent two sides of Colorado’s ski culture. Aspen delivers world-class luxury, four interconnected mountains, and a vibrant downtown scene. Crested Butte sits at the opposite end of the spectrum as a former coal mining town with Victorian storefronts, locals who still outnumber tourists, and terrain so steep it launched the freeskiing revolution. Combining both destinations in one trip gives you the complete Colorado mountain experience that most visitors never see.

why travel from aspen to crested butte
  • Birthplace of Extreme Skiing: Crested Butte pioneered inbounds extreme skiing in North America. With 561 acres of double-black-diamond terrain and the steepest sustained pitch in the country (Rambo, at 55 degrees), expert skiers find challenges here that don’t exist anywhere else.
  • Wildflower Capital of Colorado: The state legislature officially designated Crested Butte the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado” in 1990. The annual Crested Butte Wildflower Festival in July offers 150+ guided hikes, photography workshops, and botanical tours through meadows blanketed in columbine, Indian paintbrush, and lupine.
  • Incredible Mountain Biking: Crested Butte helped pioneer mountain biking alongside Marin County in the late 1970s. The valley offers 750+ miles of singletrack, and the world’s oldest mountain bike club (CBMBA, founded 1983) maintains trails that draw riders from around the globe.
  • Authentic Mountain Town: Often called “Colorado’s last great ski town,” Crested Butte’s Elk Avenue feels like stepping back in time. Colorful Victorian buildings house local breweries, farm-to-table restaurants, and ski shops that have served the community for decades, without a single chain store in sight.
  • The Grand Traverse Connection: Every spring, the Grand Traverse backcountry ski race covers the 40 miles between Crested Butte and Aspen, retracing historic mail delivery routes through the Elk Mountains. Summer versions include an ultramarathon and mountain bike race on the same route.

The journey from Aspen to Crested Butte takes you through some of Colorado’s most dramatic scenery. Once you arrive, exploring Crested Butte reveals why locals fight to keep it under the radar, from the extreme terrain accessed by the High Lift and North Face T-bars to the quiet magic of Gothic Road in wildflower season. With Blue Sky Limo, getting to Crested Butte is easy. Our professional chauffeurs navigate the mountain passes while you relax in one of our private luxury SUVs.
